Introduction
The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) was introduced by the government to meet the needs of individuals aged 60 and above as they enter retirement. This initiative ensures a source of income presenting an appealing investment opportunity. Supported by the government, the SCSS assures the safety of your invested capital. Moreover, it includes tax benefits that can help lessen the tax burden making it more enticing for the public. The SCSS offers flexibility by allowing participants to opt for a five-year term with an option to extend it for three years if desired. There is also a provision for closure under circumstances. To provide added reassurance account holders can nominate a beneficiary who will receive the invested amount in case of their demise. In essence, this scheme serves as an option for retired individuals in India, by providing income during their retirement years safeguarding their initial investment and offering tax advantages.
Need for the SCSS
The SCSS fulfils a critical need for retirees in India by addressing their evolving financial landscape. - Government backing: The SCSS is a government-backed programme, ensuring the safety of the principal investment.
- Competitive interest rates: The scheme offers attractive interest rates, allowing retirees to maximise their returns.

This led to a substantial rise in collections for the SCSS, reaching around Rs. 90,000 crore (US$ 10.79 billion) by early February compared to over Rs. 37,000 crore (US$ 4.44 billion) during the full fiscal year of 2023-24.
- The Government of India clarified that they had not increased the interest rate on the SCSS for the October-December 2025 quarter. The interest rate remained at 8.2%, providing account holders with a steady return on their deposits.
- The Union Budget 2025-26 introduced major tax relief for senior citizens. The new tax regime now offers zero tax up to Rs. 12 lakh (US$ 14,054). The tax deduction limit on interest income for senior citizens has been doubled from Rs. 50,000 (US$ 586) to Rs. 1 lakh (US$ 1,171). The TDS exemption limit on interest earned from deposits has also been doubled to Rs. 1 lakh (US$ 1,171).
